GAPC YOUTH NEWS
Youth
Spaghetti dinner Yes, it’s time to raise some money for our youth groups. The senior high needs funds to go on a Presbyterian retreat to South Padre Island this July. The elementary youth need funds for all sorts of things, such as a doorbell for a Habitat home. Come join us for an evening of food and entertainment put on by the elementary and senior high youth groups in Minter Hall, Sunday, April 30th at 6pm. We need all youth to be there! Senior High lock-in Come one, come all… Helen, Trey (Lander, Trip, Fred, or whatever you are going by now), Chris, Nick, and friends. Prepare for a night of food, movies, Easter egg stuffing, games and spaghetti dinner planning. The object is to find out where Andy and Lara are hidden inside Midway Mall AND to see who can stay up the latest. My bets are on Helen because she is always very excited about doing geometry homework. Hmmm? Meet at the church at 7 pm on Friday, April 14th. We will go out to dinner and a movie. We will spend the night at the church. Parents, please pick up your youth 7am the next morning, or I’ll make them clean carpets with their toothbrushes. BACK UP TO THE BAR
(Jerry Bylander) Since I went on the Session in February--we seem to have gotten a late start with the installation--I have been asked by some members to look at the carpet situation. What I found was more than carpets; the carpet cleaning, repair and replacement will be relatively easy. Our burnout that has surfaced won't be that easy to overcome. I am to blame, myself, for not taking an active part on session committees since I burned out on Evangelism some years ago. Apparently what happens is that we are so small now, with many aging or snowed at work, that only a few of us are even available to help. One example is the yard work that we had to subcontract out. We apparently had to subcontract it, since there was no one at the church left who was not overburdened or burned out. Another example was the program to work out long range plans for the church. We had the family night supper to set our objectives and goals. Then we planned 4 or 5 small dinners to further carry out the initial goals. The first two dinners went well, but the last one faltered so none of the rest were held. And the program died. Now think of all the effort that several members put into planning and executing this program. BURNOUT. Also I can't help thinking that if we had invited Lander to these dinners, it wouldn't have stifled discussions, but instead would have given some members an incentive to attend. We also seem to have had a lack of publicity from the pulpit. One thing that we have done then as a result is draw back from too many programs. I recall one member who thought we had too many programs any way and that he couldn't be a good member if he didn't come (he didn't). I am on the AP&P committee, and one of our members pointed out that the church needs painting; I am working on updating the carpet and some of the splash plates. Our vacuum cleaners have quit picking up dirt, and we have now selected a new one. There is the roof leak by the back sanctuary door; Lander and I decided that, with the new roof it wasn't as bad as it had been. I remember vacuuming up 2 or 3 gallons one roof earlier. So the roof repair can wait. I find that I can't run the dishwasher at major functions anymore. It totally wears me out. (As you all know, growing old is not for sissies). You need to learn how to run it if you don't know how to now. Back to chores. We were all raised to do chores; we all found out that chores don't do themselves. Someone has to do them. Therefore I am calling for all of us to pitch back in when we see something that needs doing. I notice that the company we contracted to do the flowers has been lax. Maybe one of you could help Dorinda remind them, or if they won't fulfill their contract, let AP&P know (Steve Gentry. me, Sandra Miller, Tom Lowry, Bill Pfeiffer) so we can withhold payment or cancel the contract. Some strong people have new commitments, and you can fill in where they previously volunteered. I am thinking of Steve Gentry, who is now working many nights and Laurie Mealy who is working at Habitat most of the time. She does take messages for us, which is a help. I hope this article will be a call to action to you or a call back to action. You all are now familiar with the term "tipping point". I think our church building and grounds are at a tipping point now, and this condition must be reversed, BY ALL OF US |
